This setup is popular in Sweden with the post going in front of up escalators. The reason for putting the post there is unclear, but it effectively seems to impede traffic flow. For the most part, it didn't affect me, but one day I was travelling with both my light day pack and my heavy wheeled piece of luggage.
When I got on the up escalator, the post forced me to stand sideways as I got on. I also was holding the handle of my larger piece of luggage below me as the steps raised. I didn't realize how high the steps go until the weight from my luggage reached my arm and started to pull me down and (since I was standing sideways to avoid the post) to the side. The person behind me then had the fun of watching me almost fall to the side 3-4 times as I tried to adjust in my slightly off-balance position.
So, other than trying to force unwary, hurried people to fall on their ass, I can't figure out a reason for these posts, which aren't seen anywhere else in Scandanavia.
