Iyi Bayramlar!

(Good Feasts!)

In the Islamic calendar, this is the time of the Hajj or pilgrimage to Mecca. I remember seeing stories on CNN International this week about the measures the Saudis were taking to accommodate and protect their many guests this week.

Today, 20 December 2007, is the start Islamic festival day, which in Turkish is called "Bayram" or "feast"; so I suppose that this is, more properly, the Hajj bayram. As part of the Hajj bayram, lots of cows and sheep are being brought in from the rural areas to Istanbul so that the wealthy can buy, have them slaughtered, and distribute a large portion of the meat to the less fortunate. I will be going with Zikri to purchase a lamb today and see how this system works.
My cell phone was running a repeating holiday message on it, courtesy of the folks at TurkCell.
