Swedes Across the Water

From the top of Vor Frelsers Kirke, you can see southern Sweden in the distance.

Vor Frelsers Kirke

A collegue from UCLA, Asbjorn, and I hiked up the 400 stairs to the top of this Copenhagen landmark.

A view from the top of Vor Frelsers Kirke and a picture showing how narrow the spiral staircase becomes near the top.

Strøget

Copenhagen's famous set of pedestrian shopping streets that start just to the east of the Raadhus and H. C. Andersens Blvd. They continue for over a kilometer to Kongens Nytorv (The King's New Square).

We're not in Bellevue anymore!

Seeing these travel guides in a Copenhagen bookstore amused me.

Party of One

A minor triumph: finding my first local store and buying dinner.

Denigrating Danes

With this ad campaign by the Raadhus and those Muhammed cartoons, I don't think the Danes really understand the concept of cultural sensitivity.

Howard Revered

The Danes evidently still remember Howard Jones enough to put him on national TV during prime time.

Are you man enough?

This brave woman was singing horrible renditions of Sheryl Crow songs and other American hits on the Strøget. I almost felt sorry enough to throw her a small coin ..... almost.

License's Limit

While the Danes are a famously permissive people, they've firmly, though quaintly put their collective foot down: "Don't bother bragging about what you can pay to do in Thailand, here Parkering is quite simply forbudt."

The Pope of Copenhagen

H. C. Andersens Boulevard is a major thoroughfare on the west side of the Raadhus and the Stroeget. There's even an eponymous museum that shares its entrance with Copenhagen's Ripley's Believe It Or Not.

Nite 4 Day

A 60-sec night-time exposure with my nifty Gorillapod. The photo has been lightened with Picasa considerably to show the detail better on the Web.

Double, Double, Toil, and Trouble

Another scalding geothermal pool near Geysir. This one was formed at an angle so that one can peer down the hole easily from the shore. The sparkles are coins people have thrown in to appease the Angry Icelandic Geysir God, Simmir. (Picture taken near dusk and lightened with Picasa to better show detail on the Web.)
